For this show I composed for the two very different worlds of As You Like It, the court of the Duke and the swamps of Arden. In this 1840s Louisiana version adapted by director Jane Page, we instructed a group of actors to perform all of the compositions for the Arden swamp including three songs written by William Shakespeare included in the text. Jane included a fairy godmother character who performed the underscore on guitar which was used at specific plot points to heighten the significance of the romance in the swamp.
My Role:
Boxing Match
In this example you hear the music of the court with a ragtime piano symbolizing the more stifling world of Duke Fredric. The music I composed to reflect the choreography of the on stage fight. Pausing occasionally for camera flash “strike a pose” moments.
Transition to Arden
This music underscores the scene change from the Duke's court to the swamp of Arden.
Blow Blow
In this song, members of the Duke’s camp sing to the weak servant and Orlando, that all things in life are not as bad as they seem.
Lover and His Lass
This song marks the beginning of the resolution to the narrative in swamp.
